Eventually you know instinctively where the keys are, you hands will just land in the right position. Until that time (and after) the occasional peek is okay. Also, when your hands aren't moving about so much, you have two invaluable aids.

1. consistent fingerings each and every time you play a passage.
2. the landscape of the keys; the lightest brush with your fingertips will indicate where the accidentals are.

Obviously number 2 is easier when you're playing in keys that require some accidentals. Though it's also helpful if you're playing in Am or C and don't play at the very ends of the keys.
References :
Funny; Chopin said that someone who looks at his hands "plays like a girl", which is funny for me since Chopin is not noted for masculinity, (unlike George Sand).
It comes with practice, as in typing. You know where are, and where you are going, it only seems hard now. In fact it is easier than typing.
Obviously you have to find your place again in the score, every time you look down, so if you can keep your glances to a quick minimum, you will be on your way. You can even use your peripheral vision to get a general idea of the B-C and E-F locations.
Try playing what you feel, with your eyes closed, that's another way to build the finger/brain-keyboard interface, which is less frustrating to get wrong.
Practice. Relax. Practice. It is inevitable that you will get it. Even Chopin had to learn in stages.
References :
It kind of sounds like you're doubting yourself in your piano playing which you definitely shouldn't do to yourself. Unfortunately, it is mostly about memorizing where your keys are on the piano. What you could probably do is while you're playing music, occasionally glance down at your fingers but keep focused on the music score.

Try using your peripherals with your eyes so that you can see what you're playing out of the bottom of your eyes while you're still concentrating on looking at the sheet. I found that this helped me with playing.

Also, try to notice in the music (4/4 beats may help you) when there are whole notes (4 beats long). This will give you the opportunity to glance down and check to see where your fingers are while you're playing. I hope this helps and good luck.
References :
Looking sometimes is very okay... It seems you are a beginning pianist, so just keep your hands in the same spot, because that's all you'll need to do. As you get better, the keyboard becomes ingrained in your skull, and you become more familiar with it than the back of your hand, because its a lot less complicated than the back of your hand...

It's really not that complicated. You have C. And then two black keys, and then three black keys and white keys to fit in between... Then it starts all over again...

Study this...
http://www.church-musician-jobs.com/images/PianoKeyboard_sm.jpg

So pay attention to bundles of black keys, 2 then 3 and it keeps repeating. C is at the bottom of the Group of 2. Use C as your "focal" point, at least at the beginning...

Good luck! You'll get it someday!!!

Your local music store will have more than enough books for learning. Make sure the book is "for beginners". I would recommend a book from the "Alfred" company. Once you've finished that book you could look for a book for people of "intermediate" skill level.
References :
I had the same problem when I was learning. My tutor told me to practice scales in my left hand, particularly contrary motion scales where your hands are moving in opposite directions so for instance if you were playing a contrary motion scale on C major you'd start with both thumbs on middle C, your right hand would move up the keys (D, E, F, G etc.) and your left hand would move down (B, A, G, F etc.). Once you reached two octaves you 'turn' so to speak and repeat in reverse so by the end your thumbs should both be back on middle C. It really helps to build up strength in both hands and its good for practicing keeping both hands in sync. Once you've mastered the scale on C make it a little harder and move onto D major which includes the two sharps, F and C.
If this is too hard to start off with then just practice normal scales on your left hand. If your not too confident on key signatures it might be an idea to buy yourself a book of scales to practice with.
Practice everyday and you'll soon see a difference in that left hand.
Good luck!
References :
Anyone can learn to do that- you just need to practice. It's frustrating at first, but that just means you're learning.

Find a book of simple beginners' pieces. (Unfortunately, it will probably be aimed at 6-year olds and have an embarrassing cover- put duct tape on the front or something if that bugs you.) You want the pieces to be easy to read, so that you can focus on your hands. Work through the pieces slowly and consciously, as slowly as you need to. It might feel lame or something to be working that slow- but that is how everyone has to start a piece. There is not a single musician in the world who sounded the same on his first day of practice, as he does in performance.

Learn each hand separately so you can understand what it sounds like. 'Counterpoint' comes from Latin 'puncta contra puncta', 'point against point' or note against note. It basically means having two independent melodies that sound nice together. When you understand how the melodies sound on their own, it will be easier for you to play them together.

Then, once you have an idea of what each melody should sound like (which probably won't take very long) play slowly, hands together, getting used to the different feeling. Playing hands separate and playing hands together are very distinct from each other, so don't get intimidated if it's really rough at first.

If you start to become tense or frustrated, stop and do something else. If you start to get tired, if your mind starts to wander, stop.

The only valuable practice is conscious practice, when you are alert enough to engage yourself in your music. You're better off practicing for an alert, active 30 minutes a day than a sort of mechanical, hazy 4 hours. Your endurance, like your skill, will come with time.

Make a recording of your practicing every week- you'll like seeing how much you've improved and it can motivate you when you hit a rough spot. You'll see how far you've come, and you'll appreciate your victories.

Hope this helped.
References :
If you have time, check out your local community college. For $20.00 per semester, I can get 17 group piano lessons 3 hours each week. Not a bad deal. Here are a few great online resources for you to use in the meantime:
www.learnpianoonline.com
www.practicespot.com
www.pianoladynancy.com
www.ossman.com
www.pianonanny.com
Always helps to have a teacher, but these are great resources until then.
Best of luck!

I recommend a teacher instead of a manual. I think it makes a lot of difference. It may be easy to lose motivation when learning from a piano and it's probably is not as fun. Sometimes it's also much easier to learn from seeing than figuring out.

Maybe a combination of manual and piano would work. You can look at places like Amazon.com for books and there are often reviews so you can see whether it's a good book or not.

Maybe a combination of manual and piano would work. You can look at places like Amazon.com for books and there are often reviews so you can see whether it’s a good book or not.

Last time I was there, 8Notes.com had some RIF lessons, and other neat stuff for beginners. You may want to try them out. But I haven't been there for a few months, at least, so I don't know what they've been up to.

The following site has a virtual piano that you can play using your mouse (obviously, you can't play quickly but you'll get to know the notes):

(You'll need Java installed on your computer for the virtual piano).

You need to learn how to be able to listen to any pitch, and be able to recognize it as a certain note, such as B flat or something, and once you can do that, and once you know the chords on the piano, you will be able to play the chords that you hear.

I'd practice listening to each note over an over again, until you are able to recognize it. (: Hope this helps!
References :
i live music.

There are piano lessons everywhere online, but one of the most helpful for beginners is Piano.about.com. Their lessons are really thorough, and come with images that show you exactly how everything works, and how to play it.

The guy before me said something about videos. That's another really good option ... it all depends on your best learning styles.

How long it will take you to play depends on how fast you learn, how often/long you practice, and the type of music you want to play. Everyday or every other day is a great start, and if you concentrate on moving forward in your playing and constantly challenge yourself with tougher scales and techniques, this will speed up the process.

Anyway, here are some of their lessons: http://piano.about.com/od/lessons/u/Learn_to_Play_UserPath.htm
References :
Depends on the teacher, what is being taught, where you are, etc. etc.

You have to start simple.
melody only to kid songs and then easy popular melodies
Learn how to play the I IV & V7 chords in the key of the piece. Learn which chord fits to each note in the melody line. Go from there.
References :
If you can listen to a music note and KNOW which piano key it is with very little or no guessing, then you should be able to learn to play by ear. If you can not "hear" which key it is without seeing it written, then you need to practice. Get ahold of some piano recordings of different tempo pieces. Start with the slower ones first. Listen to the notes, identify them and then try to play them. If you still have a piano teacher, ask him or her to make some recordings for you; or, if you have two pianos in the lesson room, ask him/her to play a note and have you identify and play it back. Once you have accomplished this then move on to series of notes.

I learned sightreading in choir. The technique above is how I was taught by my teacher to sing by ear. I can sing along with most songs before the song has finished the first time through and can definitely sing along with it the second time through if the words are written. Takes a few times to memorize it if the words are not written down.

Have fun!
References :
The most common scale is G minor/major but this is mostly for Jazz

For rock try major scales like D sharp Major
References :
It all depends on what you consider "good at piano." You asked the question in the classical music category... so I assume you aspire to play classical music. Even if you are a very talented individual, learning to play the piano takes years not months. Whatever piano learning software you use, your progress is likely to be slower than if you have a good teacher.
So... 6 months... not likely.
References :
if you're right handed, really train that left hand. The same goes if you're left handed.
Really though, the only key to getting better is practice. The only way to train your hands to play the different parts is practice. You should play SLOWLY on the song you are trying to learn with only one hand. Once you play that part perfectly for like 10 times consecutively, you are ready to move on. Now, practice the same amount of that song with the other hand, still slowly. When you put them together you still have to go slowly and don't rush! also, dont forget to concentrate and truly think. Eventually, muscle memory will take over and you will be able to play the parts seperately very well. You'll get better as you keep practicing, just remember that as you practice, for inspiration. haha
References :
I am a piano instructor.

I think it really just takes practice! =)

I played for several years when I was young, and quit for a few years and forgot everything! What helped most was doing the exercises (some lesson books have them in the beginning or end).

Same thing when I try to learn a new song, I just play slowly at first so that I get used to the feel, then it gets easier as I go.
References :
Hi there. I am pretty sure there is a edit button so you can change your question in the other thread, but no worries, I will just answer you here, I have all the time in the world today:)

Its really hard to predict what your results will be like, even with the "best piano learning software". In my opinion if you were to practice 1-2 hours a day you will get decent pretty fast. Now I put punctiation on decent, cause you definitely wont get world class, but you will be able to turn a couple of heads in amazement whenever there is a piano around.

As I told you I can definitely recommend the site that helped me back in the day, http://bestpianolearningsoftware.com/

Check it out and I think you will find the answers to alot of your questions there.
References :
Experienced piano player.
Extensive research about piano software and learning curves.

Determine how well you want to play. If you would be satisfied playing simple melodies with simple chord structures, then you may be ok with an online program, although I personally have never seen anyone be successful using these programs.

If you would like to play Chopin's F minor Ballade, then I would look for a qualified teacher. You cannot do it alone. Contact the Music Teachers Association in your area. Remember you will be starting at the beginning and working your way over time to the more difficult works. Be prepared to spend many hours at the piano. It does not happen overnight. The good part is that if you really have the desire to play, you will enjoy the hours practicing. It will not be a chore.

I would recommend a tutor or instructor for the first year, getting started, though there are online teaching websites. Online lessons let you go at your own pace, and mull things over yourself, so you really learn the material. Also, you can hop on anytime, and you don't need dates, times, and schedules. Also, online lessons are free. Just google it and you're sure to get plenty of websites.
I started off with a piano instructor, just one-on-one lessons for a while. It was nice because they can offer direct feedback and immediate responses to mistakes, whereas online you'd have to e-mail someone, or figure it out on your own. Also, the nice thing about an instructor is that they generally have music for beginners that they can lend you, at-least mine did. You'd have to search for beginners music on your own online, which can be fine with the right websites.
Also, an instructor can direct and present music that fits your abilities better as you improve, rather than a formula, sort of recipe lessons on the web.
Again, I'd recommend a tutor, but other resources are out there that can be more convenient.
References :
Keyboards and acoustic pianos play the same notes and the same rhythms, but keyboards have additional features such as multiple sounds, background accompaniment, recording capability, MIDI capability, etc. Keyboards are usually portable and do not always have the full 88 keys. Digital pianos are digital keyboard instruments that are less portable than typical keyboards and have all 88 keys, but have a few of the digital features, such as a limited number of additional sounds.

To learn to play the keyboard, start with piano lessons to learn the basics. Then you will need to focus on learning the style of music that you wish to play. Classical music is usually played on an acoustic piano, or at least a digital piano. Popular music, jazz, rock, country, etc. are often played on keyboards.

Try this link to find piano instruction online: http://www.themusicnmorestore.com/information.php?pID=20

Do yourself a favor and get a real, breathing, sitting-beside-you teacher. It will give major benefits in the long run. You get to respect somebody who in some cases (mine), plays a bazillion times better than you, and piano teachers give advice on more than just piano. Something a computer or somebody on YouTube can't give you.

Good luck in the search!
References :
music major, piano minor

I taught myself how to play piano and picked this up in a number of weeks. It isn't exactly easy to play, but it is fun. Here is a video that shows you how to play some of Karma Police:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wgvOUvTSjMQ

The way I learned how to play it is this: Go to http://www.synthesiagame.com/ and get the free program. Then just search on the net for a MIDI of Karma Police and upload it to Synthesia and bam, you have every note and where to play it detailed visually. All it takes is practice and a good memory.
References :
well i play by ear and i taught myself. you have to listen to a song, and pickup the notes on your own, then play the song. thats what playing by ear is. but if you want to learn, theres this website:
http://www.free-online-piano-lessons.com/

If you REALLY want to learn how to play, your best bet is to get a real instructor that you can go to for help. Good luck!! I hope you like playing! I do!!
References :
been playing piano almost a year, play over 10 instruments, and taught myself piano by ear.

I loved the old Miracle Piano system. You got a MIDI-compatible keyboard and software that included games that were fingering exercises.

The company went under, though, and the company who bought up the rights hasn't continued it. When my kids got old enough to start learning, I started looking at the newer programs but I haven't found anything that even came close to Miracle's program. You might find an old version on eBay.
References :
Pianos have 88 keys. Most keyboards however will have an octave function on them, which allows you to move the range down and up different octaves.

You can also get an 88 key keyboard. The cheapest I've seen is $300 if I recall.

As for teaching yourself, it will be moderately hard, atleast in my opinion. My advice is to learn the notes, learn to read music, and practice hard. Knowing the notes on the piano isn't all that difficult, but reading could take some time. The notes on the piano are chromatic, so knowing them should be easy as I said. Just remember the black keys are always the accidentals (Sharps (#) and Flats (b)). I'm sure there are several beginner books that will teach you how to read, as well as start you on some rudimentary scales and melodies.

Good luck!
References :
There is a cool site called Clickforlessons.com that may help you find a keyboard/piano lessons. I used them to find a piano teacher in LA, but depending on where you live it may be more difficult to find someone. You should check them out and see if they can help you.
Good luck!
References :
www.clickforlessons.com

Pianoes have 88 keys with Middle C being in the center. Since your keyboard has fewer, you'll have to read the book that comes with it to see what they left off. Your keyboard probably will have buttons which allow you to change the sound, possibly even overlay music. After you determine which notes you can play, get some sheet music and a timer to make sure you play the notes correctly and in time. Good luck.
