The piano has often been hailed by many as the instrument that knows no boundaries and time. Unlike many other instruments, the piano can be used to play any kind of musical genre. With its sweet and resounding sound and melody, it is no wonder that many people secretly or openly want to learn how to play the instrument.

When you want to learn how to play the piano, you come up with the first decision to make: learn it with a piano teacher or learn it on your own. Which is which? As you know, each of these two has its own pros and cons. What you need to do is know the advantages and disadvantages of the two, consider them, weigh them, think it over, and make your decision.

Option 1: Learn with a Piano Teacher

Learning with a piano teacher is usually the method for children. However, you, as an adult, might want or not want to take it with a teacher because of several reasons. To help you think things really through, here are the pros and cons of learning how to play the piano with a teacher.

Pros

When you learn your piano lessons with a teacher’s help you are able to: get formal instructions of piano playing, completely understand reading notes, have somebody correct whatever it is that you are doing wrong, have somebody encourage you, have positive and negative feedbacks on the way you play, really study piano seriously, and have somebody to challenge you.

Cons

However, learning with a teacher also poses some disadvantages such as; you need to make time for the piano lessons according to the teacher’s schedule, it is expensive, you might end up with a difficult teacher such as a perfectionist, and you end up taking directions from somebody else- a negative if you don’t like being told what to do.

Option 2: Learn on Your Own

Learning without a teacher’s guidance and help has often been a favorite by many of those who want to learn how to play the piano. Why? Here are the reasons.

Pros

It is cheap in that all you have to do is buy an instructional manual, book, or CD and it does not require you to take instructions from somebody else. Also, you need not adjust to anybody’s teaching style, you get to study piano playing according to your own schedule and nobody else’s, and you need not go to anybody’s house or anywhere else but your own home.

Cons

Learning on your own may seem too good to be true, but it also has its own set of cons. First, you get too lax making you end up taking a great deal of time in learning how to play the piano. Second, you have a great tendency of not learning anything especially if you are not that serious in learning how to play the piano. Third, you end up discouraged especially if you frequently end up with lessons that are hard to understand. Lastly, you never know if you are playing something right or wrong.

Think about each of the pros and cons of each of the options. What you should choose should fit your lifestyle, fancy, and mood.

It’s been months since you’ve started having piano lessons and now you feel like you are ready to take the next step. And what might that be? Buy a piano, of course.

Before you go out to buy yourself a piano, you should bear in mind that there are three different types of pianos. Each of these has its own characteristics that can be compatible with the pianist in you.

Grand

One of the very popular piano types, the grand is usually seen accompanying recording artists such as Alicia Keys, Sir Elton John, and Vanessa Carlton. This piano is also called as the horizontal piano due to its length and placement of the strings inside making it great for use of expert piano players.

There are six sub types of the grand piano and these are:

Petite grand- the main reason for its name lies on the fact that this piano only measures about 4 feet and 10 inches. Despite this, the petite grand still gives a powerful sound.

Baby grand- measuring at about 4 feet and 10 inches to a few inches above 5 feet, the baby grand is one of the most popular pianos around. There are three reasons for its popularity and these are great sound quality, nice to look at, and affordable price.

Medium grand- simply put, this piano type is just one inch bigger than the baby grand. In fact, it is mistaken for the baby grand most of the time.

Parlor grand- also known as the living room piano, the parlor grand measures at about 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet and an inch. Because of its size, it is often seen in living rooms and parlors, hence, the name.

Semiconcert grand- suffice it to say, this piano is approximately 7 feet long.

Concert grand- this is the biggest subtype of the grand pianos. It measures at 9 feet making it the number 1 choice in concerts, hence, the name.

Upright

Classified as a vertical piano because of the position of its strings, the upright piano stands at around 50 to 60 inches and with a width of around 58 inches. With these measurements, this type of piano is the tallest.

Considered as a rival of the grand piano, the upright is usually seen as inferior by some who do not know a lot about it. This piano is made of the same great quality wood as the grand piano, costs less compared to the grand, and produces a high quality sound that can be compared to the grand piano. Another good thing about this is that it can be played by experts and beginners alike.

Electric

If you are a beginner or a performer, the electric piano is the one for you. It is the cheapest type and can produce sound of other instruments such as oboe and guitar. You can also record what you have played and play it back later.

  I’m learning to play piano and I want to know if there’s any exercises I can do to improve my playing with the left hand. What I mean is that I cant play one rhythm with the left and another with the right, is there any way to help me?Anyone can learn to do that- you just need to practice.   I want to look straight to the scores while playing piano, but I can’t memorize the keyboard positions so I keep looking at the keyboard to know which key I should play. It is really disturbing, it messes up my playing because I always stop to look down. Does anybody know how to memorize it? ThanksFunny; Chopin said that someone who looks at his hands "plays like a girl", which is funny for me since Chopin is not noted for masculinity, (unlike George Sand).It comes with practice, as in typing. You know where are, and where you are going, it only seems hard now. In fact it is easier than typing.Obviously you have to find your place again in the score, every time you look down, so if you can keep your glances to a quick minimum, you will be on your way. You can even use your peripheral vision to get a general idea of the B-C and E-F locations.

Find a book of simple beginners’ pieces. (Unfortunately, it will probably be aimed at 6-year olds and have an embarrassing cover- put duct tape on the front or something if that bugs you.) You want the pieces to be easy to read, so that you can focus on your hands. Work through the pieces slowly and consciously, as slowly as you need to. It might feel lame or something to be working that slow- but that is how everyone has to start a piece. There is not a single musician in the world who sounded the same on his first day of practice, as he does in performance.

Learn each hand separately so you can understand what it sounds like. ‘Counterpoint’ comes from Latin ‘puncta contra puncta’, ‘point against point’ or note against note. It basically means having two independent melodies that sound nice together. When you understand how the melodies sound on their own, it will be easier for you to play them together.

Then, once you have an idea of what each melody should sound like (which probably won’t take very long) play slowly, hands together, getting used to the different feeling. Playing hands separate and playing hands together are very distinct from each other, so don’t get intimidated if it’s really rough at first.

If you start to become tense or frustrated, stop and do something else. If you start to get tired, if your mind starts to wander, stop.

The only valuable practice is conscious practice, when you are alert enough to engage yourself in your music. You’re better off practicing for an alert, active 30 minutes a day than a sort of mechanical, hazy 4 hours. Your endurance, like your skill, will come with time.

Make a recording of your practicing every week- you’ll like seeing how much you’ve improved and it can motivate you when you hit a rough spot. You’ll see how far you’ve come, and you’ll appreciate your victories.

Thanks!I think it really just takes practice! =)I played for several years when I was young, and quit for a few years and forgot everything! I learned sightreading in choir. The technique above is how I was taught by my teacher to sing by ear. I can sing along with most songs before the song has finished the first time through and can definitely sing along with it the second time through if the words are written. Takes a few times to memorize it if the words are not written down.

Its really hard to predict what your results will be like, even with the "best piano learning software". In my opinion if you were to practice 1-2 hours a day you will get decent pretty fast. Now I put punctiation on decent, cause you definitely wont get world class, but you will be able to turn a couple of heads in amazement whenever there is a piano around.

I played for several years when I was young, and quit for a few years and forgot everything! What helped most was doing the exercises (some lesson books have them in the beginning or end).

Same thing when I try to learn a new song, I just play slowly at first so that I get used to the feel, then it gets easier as I go.

  Ok so im getting a keyboard anybody know how i can learn how to play it myself with out getting a teacher for it?And how does this 50 keyed keyboard differ from a piano?apart from the obvious please!Pianos have 88 keys. Most keyboards however will have an octave function on them, which allows you to move the range down and up different octaves. You can also get an 88 key keyboard. The cheapest I’ve seen is $300 if I recall.As for teaching yourself, it will be moderately hard, atleast in my opinion. My advice is to learn the notes, learn to read music, and practice hard. Knowing the notes on the piano isn’t all that difficult, but reading could take some time. The notes on the piano are chromatic, so knowing them should be easy as I said. Just remember the black keys are always the accidentals (Sharps (#) and Flats (b)).

  I want a site where i can get free software that can help me learn piano or keyboard by ear! I own a keyboard but i dnt know where to start! Please help!Do yourself a favor and get a real, breathing, sitting-beside-you teacher. It will give major benefits in the long run. You get to respect somebody who in some cases (mine), plays a bazillion times better than you, and piano teachers give advice on more than just piano. Keyboards and acoustic pianos play the same notes and the same rhythms, but keyboards have additional features such as multiple sounds, background accompaniment, recording capability, MIDI capability, etc. Keyboards are usually portable and do not always have the full 88 keys. Digital pianos are digital keyboard instruments that are less portable than typical keyboards and have all 88 keys, but have a few of the digital features, such as a limited number of additional sounds.

To learn to play the keyboard, start with piano lessons to learn the basics. Then you will need to focus on learning the style of music that you wish to play. Classical music is usually played on an acoustic piano, or at least a digital piano. Popular music, jazz, rock, country, etc. are often played on keyboards.

Maybe someone can explain how they started out?

I would recommend a tutor or instructor for the first year, getting started, though there are online teaching websites. Online lessons let you go at your own pace, and mull things over yourself, so you really learn the material. Also, you can hop on anytime, and you don’t need dates, times, and schedules. Also, online lessons are free. Just google it and you’re sure to get plenty of websites.
I started off with a piano instructor, just one-on-one lessons for a while. It was nice because they can offer direct feedback and immediate responses to mistakes, whereas online you’d have to e-mail someone, or figure it out on your own. Also, the nice thing about an instructor is that they generally have music for beginners that they can lend you, at-least mine did. You’d have to search for beginners music on your own online, which can be fine with the right websites.
Also, an instructor can direct and present music that fits your abilities better as you improve, rather than a formula, sort of recipe lessons on the web.
Again, I’d recommend a tutor, but other resources are out there that can be more convenient.

The company went under, though, and the company who bought up the rights hasn’t continued it. When my kids got old enough to start learning, I started looking at the newer programs but I haven’t found anything that even came close to Miracle’s program. You might find an old version on eBay.

  I’m in high school and music is very important to me. I play the viola and the guitar and I used to take piano lessons. I stopped about 4-5 years ago and now I would like to start again. I took lessons for about 4 years so I’m past the basics but I’m not too advanced.   what are some software that i can record a keyboard piano to a computer. the piano has a usb output on it so im guessing i can just buy the usb that goes to it. ive heard of fl studio…is that any good?and i just want to know some other softwares.I have been using fl studio for years and I love it! Yes your keyboard and fl studio will work as one if you have usb output. It comes in different levels. The fruity loops edition is o.k. it will get you working but Im not sure it will let you record. You may need to read up on this too. Then theres the producers edition which I would recomend as a minimal. I use the top notch fl studio 9xxl. That is a completley unlocked program. Extremely versatile. You can make your own drum loops and create full sounding songs with drum fills, synth, effects, and a ton more.

All I want to do is find, hopefully, freeware that allows me to use the controller as a piano. Looking for something that takes the midi input (via usb) into my laptop and outputs a piano sound. Nothing fancy in the way of sequencers or the like.

It would be extra beneficial if I could switch to the sounds of different types of piano, ie classical, grand, etc.

Anyone know of anything like that?

The Ableton Live demo (http://www.ableton.com) is worth a try. You won’t be able to record with it, however. It’s a full featured digital audio workstation (synthesizers, sequencers, sampler, effects and more) so it’s more than what you’re asking for, but after going through the tutorials (the feature that really makes Live shine), I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been blown away, from a bored Answers user looking for something to up to a total electronic music enthusiast. And there’s plenty of piano sounds with it.

dont bring anything with you. there will be a piano at the lesson. it is very unlikely that there will be other people coz almost everyone learns the piano in an individual lesson. the teacher might start with asking you to show them if you can play anything or do anything on the piano. if you cant dont worry, they wont expect you to be able to do anything. they will probably spend most the lesson talking about the piano and its functions or basic music theory. they might also talk about how to sit at a piano and hand positions. dont be worried about the lesson just enjoy it.

It’s a pretty bad idea to learn to play piano by watching videos on YouTube. You may be able to play certain songs, but you won’t know any theory or how to read music, which are both CRITICAL for learning any instrument.

1st. make his parents understand that after the 1st 10 months he won’t be a Pianist and that it is a whole learning process.

2nd. Make him sing, read and play at the same time.. not so hard, you ‘ll gain time and effort, he’ll just play C D E F then F E D C and utter them with his voice then after that you write them on a paper and make a simple song like C D E D E F D C F E….. all using the same structure , he’ll learn the places on the scale and then read and sing (decode) and play… do the same for the F key, just 2 weeks after the C key depending on the amount of hours you’ll teach.

introduce him to the musical notes using that way and write him some of your "music pieces" let him be sure that he knows well the notes ( sure after you repeat them to him and give him drills)

3rd. Within your notes introduction, introduce him to the rhythm notion. don’t worry kids are so intelligent he’ll acquire it… you just carry on giving him exercises that you wrote but this time, in the 2 nd month try to harden the structure without complicating it!!!!

4th. After he/sh meets the notes and structure (rhythm) now give him the tempo notion and melody and harmony.
as he/she worked out his/her right and left hands on simple things relying first on the Pattern fingering exercise (12345,123) (123, 12345) , and second on the MIRROR EFFECT exercise.
it’s time in the 4th month to begin speaking about harmony and the melody patterns, classical music, theoretical forms….
don’t make the classical teacher!!! just do as if you are telling a fairy tale and enjoying it… sometimes when you are telling the story (which is actually history and description of the musical structure of a sonata for example) play along with it and play funny music… or instances of that history… speak about fuga and play it, and tll a funny story with it… let the student just feel it’s great

take a funny easy piece of music that the student like and give it to him as a reward…
i play for them "Super Mario" and "Zelda" also "Pokemon" well i’m a universal keyboards tutor.

So just simplify it… prepare the parents who are hoping too much, Introduce Notes, draw small exercises, introduce rhythm, introduce tempo notion, now you have someone who knows a little bit from everywhere. Remember to make things so so easy for the little student avoid complex structures, he/she needs to know and learn and thinks that piano is fun
so let piano be fun for him, the funniest the piano is, the better he’ll love it, believe me.
you don’t need Bach, Bethoven and Strauss…. those are from our old school and for advanced level,
your student needs to have fun and know the piano, needs to make sound, give him the opportunity to make sound and boost his self esteem through those small 4 notes exercises.

You’ll say "well that exercise is nothing", He’ll say "i played music from the first time i met a piano, i’m a genius"… see?? he’ll be happy and stronger.
All that because he does not have any music knowledge, when i learnt keys i had 2 years of theory classes…
So the plan is simple, go ahead best teacher ever
i know this might not be what you expect as answer but trust me it works well. Hope it helps you.

You probably do all of these things anyway and just don’t realize it.

I have a finger that lost it’s tip and was reattached. It has absolutely no feeling what so ever in the tip, but I know how hard I am pressing the keys (I love to play touch sensitive keyboards on top of it all!) by paying attention to how the muscles in my upper (toward the knucke) fingers feel.

  I write music on the piano for my band and there are some songs I wrote on the piano that are very pretty. They’re very hard to play but I can still hit every note and chord correctly and play the same tempo throughout the whole song.   OKay I’ve been playing piano for about 5 months and I’ve been trying to learn how to play A thousand miles on the piano but the left and right hand is played at different times. Thats reaallyyy hard to pick up on! Is there anyone that can give me some advice on how to practice doing this? Much apprieciated. Thank youu. :)It depends on what those times are. If you still end up with the same number of beats in a measure (like if you have 2/4 and 6/8), you could count in that number of beats, and you would just be playing different rhythms on each hand. If the measures cannot be counted together that easily, create your own way of counting it so that it does work, even if it means grouping different numbers of measures together on each hand.

Why pussyfoot?**NO**You can teach yourself to make noises using my instrument. But to play it, i.e. to be master of it, you’ll need another master of it to pass his secrets on to you. Do you honestly think I, and uncountable others, would have bothered with our struggles with that devil’s box of steel strings and wooden parts if it was quite that easy?Has it ever crossed your mind why you don’t ever see ‘can I teach myself violin/euphonium/ double-bass’?I genuinely don’t want to be unkind by posting this, but I am tearing my hair out at all these comforting replies that suggest you will ever succeed: if you want to *master* the instrument instead of make noises on it, you won’t!

  I am considering taking piano lessons but i don’t know how many keys the keyboard i need to buy will need. There are like 61, 76, and 88 ones with prices going up from more keys. So, how many keys do i need?Your first two answerers are right on about the need for a real piano. If you must buy a keyboard, go for at least 61 keys, but even more important is that you need to buy a keyboard that responds dynamically. Easy way to test: the sound when you press a key really hard should be A LOT louder than when you press the key very softly. Most inexpensive keyboards do not respond dynamically to the player’s touch.There are ways to get around owning a piano, though. See if you can practice on one in your school’s band or orchestra room (or practice rooms, if there are some) during study hall or before or after school.
