The piano is one of the most magical and historical musical instruments ever invented. Aside from this, it is also one of the most expensive. This is why, when you own a piano, you have to take good care of it. You need to maintain not only its good looks but also the quality of sound it produces.
So what comprise the care and maintenance of your piano? Here are some tips:
Tip#1: Fine Tune it
This should be the number one priority in taking care of your piano. Whether you play the piano everyday, or once a year, or just let it sit in your parlor, you should always have it fine tuned. In fact, it is recommended that you have your piano fine tuned twice per year.
Fine tuning is very important in piano care. Because of it, you will be able to check and keep the quality of the sound your piano keys produce. Especially when you play your piano a lot, some things such as the strings, become loose. As they loosen, the sound they produce will also change. Some become high pitched while others become low pitched. With this, your piano will become off key.
When you have your piano fine tuned, make sure that it is done by a tuner-technician. Ask for his credentials or simply make sure that he knows what he is doing. Having the fine tuning done by somebody who simply makes twists and turns without knowledge of what he is doing will only destroy your piano.
Tip #2: No Liquids
Whether your piano is made of synthetic material, such as fiberglass, or real wood, make sure that you do not put liquid anywhere on its body. Why? For starters, you could end up having liquid stains on its body thereby marring its beauty. If you have an electronic keyboard, you know what happens when liquid is introduced to an electronic device- short circuit.
Tip #3: Cover the Keys
The keys are very important to the piano. Because of it, people are able to play the instrument. By taking care of them, you will also lengthen the life of your musical instrument. So what should you do? Always cover the keys whenever you are not using the piano.
Tip #4: Regulate Temperature and Humidity
You may or may not know it but great changes in temperature and humidity that accompany seasonal shifts are one of the greatest enemies of a piano. Not only will these destroy the casing, but they will also cause changes in the piano’s performance. When the temperature drops or rises, the wooden parts of the piano will either shrink or swell. Aside from this, the change in temperature will also cause the wood to crack and some parts to unglue.
To help regulate the temperature, keep the piano’s location within a certain temperature range with a thermometer. With the humidity, you can deal with this by installing a piano humidifier/ dehumidifier. Just to play it safe, ask a seasoned technician about what the best humidifier is, where to get it, and how to install it.
Caring and maintaining your piano is a no-brainer. It is simple, easy, and requires nothing else but your common sense.

Many times over, people who are interested in learning how to play the piano ask the question, “Do I need a piano to learn how to play it or will a keyboard do?” Many say that you don’t need a piano to learn how to play one, while others say otherwise.
Before getting into the decision of which is which, you need to know what differences lie between a piano and a keyboard. Also, you need to know what each of them can do and see how each can help you in your quest to learning how to play the piano.
Piano
First of all, the piano is the traditional musical instrument. It makes sound or music whenever a hammer strikes the strings. So with each time you strike a key, the hammer connected to it will strike its corresponding string thereby producing a musical sound. Because of these two, the piano produces sounds that are distinctive for each key making it easy for you to identify the differences of the sounds produced.
One great advantage of learning with a piano is that you are able to pick up on the key progressions and differences. This is entirely due to the fact that the instrument produces high quality sound. With this, learning the piano in whatever method is greatly facilitated with the sound quality. Whether you learn by ear, or by the pentatonic method, or by music reading, you can be sure that it will be somewhat easier.
The problem with learning with a real piano is that it can be expensive. Whether you buy one for yourself, or rent, or go to a music teacher for your lessons, using a real piano will cost some money.
Keyboard
This is the electronic version of the traditional piano. In this, the music produced is derived via the miracle of electronic technology. With this, the keyboard produces sounds that are made to imitate the sounds that a piano produces. As you can expect, the sound produced will not be as distinctive as an authentic piano would.

The beauty behind learning with a keyboard is that aside from the difference between sound qualities, there is not much of a difference. The keys are arranged and patterned in the same way. In fact, they both look similar. Also, there are a lot of keyboard brands to choose from and these cost way lesser than a piano. With this, owning a keyboard becomes more possible than a piano.
Another thing that you should know about the keyboard is that it is way flexible than the piano. Should the mood for privacy strike you, you can always practice in peace by attaching headphones to the keyboard. With this, you can hear nothing else but the piece that you are practicing as well as not ‘bother’ anybody with your piano practice. Because of these reasons, many say that a keyboard will simply do in learning the piano.
With all things considered, a piano may be the traditional and best way of learning how to play the instrument, but if you are practical, the keyboard will do. After all, the keyboard is nothing else but the electronic version of the piano.

When you decide to learn how to play the piano, there are three approaches to it. Below are the ways that anybody, especially the adults, can learn how to play one of the grandest musical instruments ever.
Learn by Ear
This is the easiest way of learning piano. Why? All you have to do is listen to a piece and translate it on the keyboard. You don’t need to read anything. You don’t need to see the music piece. You don’t even need formal instructions. All you need is a good ear and a very good key sense in order to apply what you hear to the piano keys.
With the way you learn music pieces, you know that you also need a very good memory. Why? Since you can not read music, you need to memorize exactly how the music is played. You need to memorize the key progressions, sequencing, and the like.
Learning by ear is easy and cheap, however, it also has a lot of disadvantages. The first is that you do not have any understanding of the music you are playing. You may be playing a music piece but that’s only it. The second disadvantage is that you won’t be able to play another music piece unless you hear and learn another one. The third disadvantage is that this method of learning is often difficult for those who learn visually.
Learn thru Music Reading
This is, by far, the most traditional way of learning how to play the piano. In this way, you have to learn the basics of reading music. Why? It allows you to really learn the language of music by learning the notes.
In this method, you need to learn each note, how is it played, the symbols that are used in music pieces, as well as know how to apply all these on the piano keyboard.
As expected, this method is exhaustive and difficult. As a matter of fact, this method basically makes anyone have the feeling of learning another language- a feeling that is also a fact in itself.
The beauty of this method is that you will be able to apply music reading in playing other instruments. With music reading, learning how to play another instrument other than the piano will be a breeze for you. Also, with music reading, you will be able to have a very good grasp in the basics of piano playing that when you get to playing the difficult pieces, you won’t be having a hard time.
Learn thru Pentatonic Method
Learning how to play thru the pentatonic method simply means that you need to learn how to play the piano using the five note scale. Each of the five notes corresponds to each of the five black keys in the piano keyboard. In this way, you are able to learn how to play by ear while at the same time know a bit of music reading. This method of piano learning is actually a combination of the two other methods.
The pentatonic method of learning piano is very good for those who are aural, visual, or tactile in their learning. Also, this method is easy and quick. It cuts down to the basics and makes you learn what is only necessary.
